Titanfall ditches separate CTF/Pilot Hunter modes: “not widely used; overlong wait times”

No game can ever live up to the kind of hype generated by Titanfall. The beta only enhanced feelings that the game could be something special, and pushed anticipation to fever pitch. This is the game to save the Xbox One, or so they say. The game that revolutionises the genre. And you know what, as crazy as it sounds, they may not be entirely wrong — at least in some respects.

Last week, Respawn pulled Pilot Hunter and Capture the Flag “With that few players attempting to connect, our matchmaking would just sit.

Chris Thursten questioned Titanfall’s staying power in his review back in March, and that staying power is unlikely to be invigorated by Respawn’s decision to remove the Capture the Flag and Pilot Hunter modes from the PC version of the game. Well, that’s not entirely accurate – they’ve removed both modes as separate playlists, but they’re still around in the Variety game mode, or if you decide to play a private match.

The reason for their removal? They were “not widely used” in the PC version, causing “overlong wait times” for players who wanted to join. Removing said modes is one way to reduce wait times, I guess. Here’s Respawn’s explanation in more depth, from a recent explanatory post on the Titanfall site:. Players trying to access these modes had overlong wait times to find other users and it was making for a poor experience.

We want to make sure that not only is there compelling content in the playlists we offer, but that the experience of joining a match works well. We’re tracking what playlists players are choosing, and we’re going to continue to look at unpopular playlists and add new ones on both platforms. Although Respawn state that they’re “currently working on [ It’s hard to say.

Numbers might still have been a problem, but at least players would be privy to that information, and could better arrange matches themselves.

CTF will return to Titanfall PC following player complaints

Respawn removed both the Capture the Flag and Pilot Hunter game modes from matchmaking last week, making them available only via variety mode and private matches.

Our first step was removing playlists that were effectively broken.

Titanfall indoctrinates new pilots with 14 basic tutorials, showing you how to Pilot Hunter (take out the enemy pilots to win – you can drop Titans, but zero lag-related issues, and have had no problems with matchmaking.

We were able to get some quality time with the near-final build of the Xbox One version of the game this weekend, though, playing alongside fellow journalists and developers from EA and Respawn. That time was enough to develop some general impressions of the title beyond our extensive time with the beta. The biggest addition over the beta release is in the campaign mode, which takes nine normal six-on-six multiplayer matches on specific maps and dresses them up with a thin veneer of story.

A hardpoint area-capturing match might turn into a battle to secure anti-aircraft guns to protect a planet from an invasion or to protect the invading force, on the other side. A kill-them-all Attrition battle on a dry desert planet turns into a key battle to secure the only convenient fueling station in that area of space. None of this affects the gameplay at all, and it really only provides the barest sense of narrative context for the battles.

More than an advancing plot, the story simply hammers home the general impression of a hackneyed, never-ending conflict between an evil space empire and the scrappy militia rebels.

Titanfall DLC Maps Added to Regular Playlists

Titanfall developer Respawn is adding CTF back to the PC game’s public playlist, following the outcry about it and Pilot Hunter mode being removed from all except Private Matches and the odd randomised Variety mode. Respawn explained on its dev blog that less than one per cent of players were even trying to play CTF, which left those unfortunate souls sitting in lobbies for several minutes on end. Since this is a crappy experience, Respawn figured cutting it would filter players into more convenient modes.

Players did not take kindly to this option being removed. Respawn offered a very detailed account of how matchmaking works , but ultimately decided that to solve the problem of not enough people playing CTF it’s going to widen searches after a set period of time to include neighboring continents.

Titanfall – CTF & Pilot Hunter Separate Playlists Removed From The a lovely browser list instead of the game’s current Matchmaking system?

Titanfall is a multiplayer first-person shooter video game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. The game was anticipated as the debut title from developers formerly behind the Call of Duty franchise. In Titanfall , players control “Pilots” and their mech -style Titans, and fight in six-on-six matches set in the war-torn outer space colonies of the Frontier.

The game is optimized for fast-paced, continual action, aided by wall-running abilities and populations of computer-controlled soldiers. Up to 50 characters can be active in a single game, and non-player activity is offloaded to Microsoft’s cloud computing services to optimize local graphical performance. The game’s development team began work on the title in , and their Titan concept grew from a human-sized suit into a battle tank exoskeleton.

The team sought to bring “scale, verticality, and story” to its multiplayer genre through elements traditionally reserved for single-player campaigns. Titanfall won over 60 awards at its E3 reveal, including a record-breaking six E3 Critics Awards and “Best of Show” from several media outlets. It also won awards at Gamescom and the Tokyo Game Show. Titanfall received generally favorable reviews.

In the wee hours of the night on Thursday, Respawn made a stealthy announcement that they would be removing Capture the Flag and Pilot Hunter modes from the PC version of Titanfall. appearing in Titanfall 2, and the effective replacement for Pilot Hunter the addition of Mixtape Matchmaking in the Live Fire update) or in Private Match.

When Titanfall came out back in March, I recommended it mostly on the strength of its Capture the Flag mode. I now retract that recommendation. Developers Respawn Entertainment have removed the ability to play both Capture the Flag and Pilot Hunter modes on PC, except through the Variety option which picks your mode at random or Private Match beta which pretty much requires that you have eleven friends all waiting to play with you.

Players trying to access these modes had overlong wait times to find other users and it was making for a poor experience. We want to make sure that not only is there compelling content in the playlists we offer, but that the experience of joining a match works well. Our goal is to have a wide variety of playlists that are popular and changing. That said, we will not remove modes from Private Matches, so there will always be the option to select them for competitive and personal play.

Thanks for your understanding as we try to make Titanfall a better experience for everyone.

Miss Capture The Flag In Titanfall? It’s Coming Back

Respawn Entertainment is trying to constantly tweak and improve the online experience for Titanfall players and get them back in. The developer removed the Pilot Hunter and Capture The Flag game modes from the PC version over lack of interest, and now players on all platforms have a new update in store — complete with brand new game modes. The game modes, which were posted on the Titanfall website along with the rest of the update, will be hosted in a brand new feature of the playlist rotation: the Featured Game Mode.

Another game mode was announced in the post, called Wingman Last Titan Standing.

CTF and Pilot Hunter have not been widely used modes on the PC Of course you could host private servers and there wasn’t a matchmaking system.

The development team at Respawn Entertainment acknowledges that it might have made a mistake by removing the Capture the Flag mode from Titanfall on the PC and says that it is getting ready to reinstate the mode and make a number of other changes to improve the matchmaking experience in the long term. The company has devoted a long blog post to the issue in order to make sure that all members of the community who are upset and expressed their anger get a chance to understand the reasoning of the studio and how it is constantly aiming to improve the game.

Respawn Entertainment explains the difference between using a classic server browser and the automated matchmaking it has created for Titanfall and how the Microsoft-powered cloud-based tech is designed to make the process quick. They explain that, “While there isn’t anything inherently wrong with a server browser, we’ve chosen to take the onus of finding a good match off the player. The ideal goal of a good matchmaking system is to have a complete view of all currently joinable games to find you the perfect match.

The studio says that it is planning to give gamers more options when it comes to the customization they can do for private matches. The reintroduction of Capture the Flag will come with an extended search area for matches, which means that gamers might end up with groups from other continents with less than optimal ping time and that at times, the skill level will be unbalanced. It seems like the Pilot Hunter mode is not going to be reintroduced to Titanfall on the PC, probably because the player numbers are even lower and there’s no solution to make it viable.

Titanfall gets private matches in new patch

August So is pilot hunter ever coming back for pc? It seems like they fixed matchmaking for the most part but it still hasn’t returned.

CTF and Pilot Hunter have not been widely used modes on the PC Titanfall CTF never got updated matchmaking like the other modes.

We’ve never covered a game more extensively than we did Titanfall; it was the first game featured in our individualized video card benchmarks , we wrote crash fix guides to mitigate rampant bugs in beta, and produced a Last Titan Standing strategy guide for fans of the mode. The game has long been a bit of a shortcoming in my eyes, though; it wants desperately to be a twitch shooter, and yet so many things are wrong — like the weaponset should be more explosive, like in Unreal Tournament and lack of a server browser.

Once again, PC gamers have been handed a console interface and been told to toddle off and have fun. Still, we could get by with the matchmaking UI by selecting the preferred game mode and waiting the arduously long pre-match period. It took approximately minutes to find a CTF match and included the oh-so-necessary second delay between rounds , but that was fine for those who enjoyed the game mode.

EA and Respawn say that this wait was ruining the gaming experience, so, naturally, they’ve elected to remove the option to play CTF almost entirely. CTF and Pilot Hunter will remain in “variety” pack rotation, but have been eliminated from the matchmaking screen as individual options. Flawless logic. Here’s what Respawn had to say :. Players trying to access these modes had overlong wait times to find other users and it was making for a poor experience. We want to make sure that not only is there compelling content in the playlists we offer, but that the experience of joining a match works well.

Is this game dying, or does the matchmaking system suck?

After removing Capture the Flag and Pilot Hunter as regular multiplayer modes in the PC version of Titanfall, Respawn Entertainment has reinstated the former following criticisms from fans. It also provided an explanation as to why CTF was removed in the first place: less than 1 percent of players were actually playing the mode on PC. This resulted in a less than stellar matchmaking experience. This is a bad experience for the user, and so we had to look at how we fix it. Our first step was removing playlists that were effectively broken.

The second step is to continue refinement of our matchmaking. This is where the hard part of matchmaking starts. What happens if that perfect match never opens up? Regardless, Capture the Flag is back for now.
